Periventricular leukomalacia
- due to
ischemia to the vascular border zone around the cerebral ventricles
- spastic diplegia
pattern (mainly
lower legs) arises commonly in preterm infants from ischemia to the vascular
border zone around the cerebral ventricles and resultant periventricular
leukomalacia
- (vs spastic hemiplegia - mainly
upper extremities - due usually to atrophic cerebral hemisphere)
- (vs spastic quadriplegia:
hypomyelination of the basal ganglia following hypoxic-ischemic injury in an
infant who is born at term, or kernicterus
