Mongolian Spot (hyperpigmented macule)
- the most common hyperpigmented lesion in the newborn
- in 90% of AA, asian, hispanic infants
- often over buttocks, flanks, shoulders
- gray, blue-green
- may be mistaken for bruises. document size and location!
- caused by melanocytes that infiltrate the dermis, tend to fade gradually
over 1st 3 years of life, but some may persist into adulthood
