Mongolian Spot (hyperpigmented macule)

  1. the most common hyperpigmented lesion in the newborn
  2. in 90% of AA, asian, hispanic infants
  3. often over buttocks, flanks, shoulders
  4. gray, blue-green
  5. may be mistaken for bruises. document size and location!
  6. caused by melanocytes that infiltrate the dermis, tend to fade gradually over 1st 3 years of life, but some may persist into adulthood
