Milia

  1. 1 mm yellow/white papules
  2. In 40% of nbn. On brow, cheek, nose.
  3. Epstein's pearls are milia in the mouth.
  4. They are epidermal cysts with accumulations of sebaceous gland secretions
  5. Resolve spontaneously during 1st few weeks of life.

Sebaceous gland hyperplasia

  1. tiny <0.5 mm yellow/white papules
  2. Nose, cheek, upper lip
  3. maternal androgens cause enlarged sebaceous glands
  4. decrease in size p birth, no tx

Miliaria

  1. 4 types
  2. caused by sweat gland obstruction in warm, humid environment
  3. forehead, scalp, creases, groin area
  4. Miliaria crystallina: clear, thin vesicles 1-2 mm
  5. Miliaria rubra: prolonged obstruction of miliaria crystallina... small erythematous papules.
  6. Miliaria pustulosa: prolonged occlusion...leukocytes infiltrate papule
  7. Miliaria profunda: secondary infection of deeper dermal portion of sweat gland
  8. Tx: elim precipitating factors (ie. heat, humidity), keeping infant clean and dry causes lesions to resolve in a few hours
