Cribs
- If you use a new crib or one made since 1990,
it should meet current safety standards.
- Should me no more than 2 3/8 inches between
slats- so child’s head can’t get trapped
- Cut off or unscrew corner posts- can snag
loose clothing and choke child
- Re-inspect crib weekly for loose hardware,
damage, sharp edges…
- If mattress is covered with heavy plastic,
make sure it fits tightly
- Set mattress at its lowest position by the
time the child learns to stand.
- Move child to bed once she is 35 inches tall,
or the height of the side rail is <3/4 her height
- When lowered, top of side rail should always
be at least 4 inches above mattress
- Use crib bumper when child is an infant
(should go all the way around the crib, and secured with at least 6 straps or
ties; ties should be no more than 6 inched long)
- Remove toys, pillows, bumpers when child can
pull to stand- can be used to step on and fall out
- Hang mobile out of reach of baby, and remove
it when he gets to his hands and knees, or when he reaches 5 months, whichever
is first
- Don’t place a crib (or any bed) beside a
window- to prevent the most serious falls
Changing Tables
- Changing table should have at least 2-inch
guardrail around all 4 sides
- Top of table should be concave
- Never leave a child unattended on a dressing
table, even for a moment, whether strapped or not
- Keep disposable diapers stored out of child’s
reach- child can pull of pieces of plastic and choke on them
