Chalazion vs Hordoleum

• Chalazion (Internal Hordeolum): Infection and inflammation of the Meibomian glands
• External Hordeolum (Stye): Infection and inflammation of the glands of Zeis or Moll

Chalazion (doesn't hurt)

• Chronic lipogranuloma of the meibomian gland
• Firm, slow-growing, nontender nodule in the lid
• Course: Usually self-resolve with warm compresses; If persistent require resection by ophtho

Hordeolum (infection: redness, pain)

• Inflammation or infection (usually staph) of a sebaceous gland of the eyelid
• +Signs of inflammation: Erythema, edema, tenderness
• Treatment: Warm compresses, +/- antibiotic ointment and I&D
